MacTeX is usually compared to TeX Live as far as compilers. I prefer TeX Live because I use sublime-text as an editor and it (only?) works with TL. But if you're on a mac, I would highly recommend using TeX Shop as your editor. I really liked using that when I used to do most of my work on my old macbook.

I believe TeX Shop works only with MacTeX. If you're only using Windows, I would recommend TeXnicCenter as your editor. I don't think TC cares if you are using either mactex or texlive. As an editor TeXMaker is nice because it's cross-platform so if you're working on a linux machine at work and then go home to a windows machine, you can have consistency in your editor. But I believe the best cross-platform solution is getting Sublime Text working as your editor -- sublimetext can also build the pdf and jump-to-current location, etc. It takes a lot more work to set up than any of the out-of-the-box options but it's fantastic once you get it going.

MacTeX is TeXLive – just bundled as an OS X package with some specific goodies (like TeXShop). Sublime Text will work with MacTeX. (When I tried out ST, I compiled a few documents to get a feel for the flow.) TeXShop will be most similar to online compilers so that you can make the switch as painlessly as possible, but I do recommend OP switch to a more powerful editor down the line: TeXmaker, ST, Emacs, and Vim are all good choices (Emacs being my favorite), and they're all cross-platform.

Jump-to-current location This isn't specific to ST; it's a technology called SyncTeX and is available with any editor that implements it. If I might ask, what troubles are you having with ST? Shit i meant miktex everywhere i said mactex edit: responding to your question. I'm not having issues with ST, but setting it up on linux required some editing of the latextools package settings that i think a first-timer would be more annoyed with than if they used an editor like texmaker or texnic center. But when i first got it running, i thought i remembered the readme saying that miktex doesn't come with latexmk which was needed to compile from within ST.
